A Home

I haven’t been very diligent at writing on the blog over the last few weeks and I do apologize about that. I have been spending most of my time without internet service because I just moved into my own apartment. But have no fear; though I still don’t have internet service at my apartment, I am committed to ensuring that this blog keeps me in touch with the world or at least my thoughts, ideas and insights in touch with the world.

When I moved to DC I brought with me two suitcases and a carry-on bag full of stuff. Mainly the items were clothes, so that I could get a job and look professional, along with some shoes that would be appropriate with the clothes selection. The vast majority of my possessions are sitting at my brother’s house in a closet. As I was packing and deciding what I would bring with me and what would be left behind in Utah there was one thing that I wanted dearly to bring with me but couldn’t seem to fit it in my baggage and keep within the set weight limit the airline had restricted me to. As hard as I tried I couldn’t fit in some speakers that I am able to plug my IPod into and listen to music without the aid of headphones. Last night a kind friend lent me her speakers so that I could have music in my apartment while I await my speakers from Utah (I hate to go buy something that I already own). You might ask why I didn’t just use my laptop and listen to music through those speakers but it isn’t the same. Laptop speakers are good for listening to newscasts and youtube videos but not music and movies. I tired and it just isn’t the same. So, last night as I was getting ready for bed I plugged my IPod into the speakers and let the music reverberate off my walls and into my ears and my apartment became more a home than it has since I moved in.

I thought what I might want to play for the first piece of music from the IPod and a few ideas came to mind but sometimes I like to see what fate has in store and let “shuffle” work its magic. The song that played was “What Led Me to This Town” by the Jayhawks. I chuckled a little bit because it was so appropriate for the moment and how I was feeling (sometimes that shuffle option on the IPod just knows exactly what I need). I sang along and continued to get ready for bed and a couple of other great songs played, of which Radiohead was one selection.

This morning I woke up and was thinking about what I was going to do today and my first thought was to blog and show some pictures of my new place (which are below). I started to warm up some water for some chamomile tea with honey, because I have been filling a little sick with a sniffley nose, and turned on the music. The song was Andrew Bird’s “Lull” which I found to be appropriate for what I waned to blog about today and how I was feeling in general. I have inserted some of the lyrics of the song in between the pictures below so that you can get a sense of my thoughts as I listened.

Because I have taken so many pictures it may appear like there is a lot of space in my apartment or that it is big. Though it is not that small it isn't that big either. I just wanted to make sure that you got to see all of it in its grandeur and beauty.

being alone it can be quite romantic

like jacques cousteau underneath the atlantic

a fantastic voyage to parts unknown

going to depths where the sun’s never shone

and i fascinate myself when i’m alone

i’m all for moderation but sometimes it seems
moderation itself can be a kind of extreme

so i go a little overboard but hang on to the hull

while i’m airbrushing fantasy art on a life
that’s really kind of dull

i’m rambling on rather self consciously
while i’m stirring these condiments into my tea

and i think i’m so lame

bet i think this song’s about me

don’t i don’t i don’t i ?

Just yesterday I was wondering when you were ever going to post and let us know how you are doing. I'm so glad you posted today. Congrats on the new apartment (and on your wonderful taste in music). you have know idea how jealous my fifth-grade-self would be of your black-and-white checkered tile floor. I wanted one in my bedroom at the time.

And maybe I missed something, but where are you working?

I HATE it when I make typos. In your head, just change "you have know idea..." to "You have no idea...," if you could. That would make me feel so much better. Thanks.

Hi Corb. Your toilet seat is up.

Good post :-)

Anna, thanks for noticing the toilet seat. Isn't it great that I don't have to worry about getting told to put it down:)

I really like how the bathroom is the most colorful room. The frog mat is great.

Are you saying that I told you to put the toilet seat down?

I don't see a single roach!

Cool apartment. It's funny that most of your comments are about the bathroom but I too, think it is the best room in the house. I notice the toilet seat as well. Funny, maybe girls always notice the toilet seat.Hmmm.

I like the apartment. I like the color of the walls for some reason. On a side note, you should hang upside down posters all over like I do.
