One Week in DC

The night I arrived my friend Ashley picked me up at the airport. She was late getting there and so I gathered my luggage from the carousel and waited. Initially, I thought that because it was July 4th there was probably a lot of metro traffic and that was slowing her down. As time went on and I was sitting at the terminal with fewer and fewer people around and my thoughts started to make me worry about being stranded in the airport for my first night in DC. Who knows what would happen by morning if she didn’t show up? Ashley did arrive and it was very good to see her, not just to ease my stress.

It was super humid outside and in addition it was raining so I was really miserable trying to adjust to the weather. The metro ride was great, we laughed and discussed all kinds of things like crazy tourists adorning themselves in large amounts of American flag pins and other such paraphernalia. We got to the metro stop and now had to heave my luggage 4 to 5 blocks through the streets of DC and the light rain/mist. It being the 4th of July a lot of people were still awake and shooting off firecrackers. Ashley mentioned that usually when you hear loud bangs it is best to duck but since it was Independence Day we should be alright. We got to her place and I have been sleeping on the couch since.

I really like it here. I have been spending a lot of time trying to find a job and filling out applications. No positions have been offered yet but I have a temp job next week with the American Institutes of Research so that will be nice to actually be working. I don’t have a car and have been taking the bus and metro everywhere which has been nice. I don’t have to worry about stupid drivers and can just sit back and wait for my stop. It does take a long time to get around and planning ahead is involved which I am not very good at when it comes to getting to places on time but for now I like it.

Here are some more pictures of me not being a tourist.

These first two pictures are for you mom, I know how you think Kevin Costner is good looking. I saw him at the movie premier that I went to.

I would recommend the movie Swing Vote to everyone. It was a good movie with a good message. It reminded me of what I would like to do sometime in my life.

Ashley, Chandana, my new friend, and I before the movie.

This one is for you "Tinman", a replacement for me until a more permanent and better one can be found. A winged dog and some man riding some strange creature.

A crazy pig monster at one of the art galleries. Look familiar to anyone?

A wood carving of death and war.

This exhibit is made out of tinfoil and cardboard.

Some beautiful pictures of a great building.

Just forget about having a car, Corb. Those are things of the past.

But make sure you still come and see Radiohead with us (if at all possible).

I was only late because of tourists on the metro! I can't help that you timed your flight to arrive JUST as 10,000 people were leaving the firework display!

Cars are for wusses.

EW!!! Pig monsters. Ugh!

Man, I remember my arrival in DC with two huge suitcases without rollers, a shoulder suitcase and my purse....and I couldn't fit through the metro things all in one try and no one would help me and I had to drag that luggage to Cosi and it was miserable. I could only walk about 5 steps until I had to stop and take a breath. I hope that scene plays on my blooper reel in the hereafter along with the time I karate chopped the guy in Pier 1 thinking it was you.
